What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that is the most widely reported cause of food-related illnesses in the United States. You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it.

Salmonella is a bacterium found in foods and animals. The CDC estimates Salmonella causes 1.2 Million Illness and 450 deaths in the U.S every Year.

The disease from these bacteria is officially called salmonellosis. It can cause stomach upset, diarrhea, fever, and pain and tightness in your stomach. Most people get better at home within four to seven days.

Common Symptoms including diarrhea, fever and Cramps usually last 4 to 7 days. Most of the people recover without treatment, but some cases can be more serious.

There are some things you can do to avoid Salmonella. Don’t eat raw or undercooked eggs, meat or poultry. Wash anything that has contact with raw meat or eggs. Reptiles and birds are common carriers of Salmonella. Wash your hands after handling reptiles or birds.

Salmonella Treatment

Adequate fluid treatment and bed rest are all you need to deal with this condition. In severe cases, antibiotic treatment is often recommended. Antimicrobials such as ampicillin, fluoroquinolone, chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole are usually prescribed to eliminate salmonella. These drugs are taken in 5-7 days or in severe cases for 10-14 days. Antibiotics are especially needed if a doctor suspects that bacteria have reached the bloodstream.

Other treatments for the disease are anti-diarrheal drugs such as loperamide. Anti-emetics are also given to relieve nausea and vomiting. An important treatment for salmonella is fluid therapy to correct fluid loss and prevent thirst.
